Pirates are the next big thing

When it comes to subcultures, trends play a major part in the development of a new seemingly exclusive "in" thing.

After a long period of pondering it suddenly dawned upon me: Pirates will become the new "in" thing... Not that they were ever out.

History has been proven to repeat itself, especially in regards to subcultures and the fashion trends that critically accompany them and shape their identity.

In regards to pop culture (arguably the largest subculture to ever walk planet Earth, second only to Apes) it makes perfect sense. As we move forward in time, we move backwards in fashion. So keeping my theory in mind it will not be anymore than 2 decades before "Evil Pirate Children" grow up and form the collective subculture known only as "Pirates".

That's cool. I think it will be more about the interest in tall ships and 3/4 trousers that will tie this group of lovely patch wearing, parrot carrying members of the future together - rather than looting, rape and treasure. I think.

Remember this post. In 20 years you will all think, "Fuck there's a lot of Pirates out tonight..!"

Guaranteed.

Until then; Love Pirates y'all.

Born to die

I hate myself and I want to die

Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.

Bodybuilding and all things tan!

Is it just me or has society become so obsessed in the image we portray? Bodybuilding has literally taken over mainstream society with both men and woman becoming self obsessed and gym junkies! An individual who engages in this activity is referred to as a "bodybuilder". Bodybuilding is a form of physical activity that involves intensive muscle hydrotherapy, this type of individual is obsessed in ones appearance with them being on a strict diet regime that consist of vegetables, protein shakes and lean meats. Bodybuilding has even become dare i say it.... A "competitive sport" as bodybuilders show off their lean and tone bodies in front of a panel of judges. Within the preparation of this competition both men and woman will tan there bodies in a ridiculous amounts of tan until they look like a bronze medallions.. not the most attractive look. But yet it has become the latest rage, i look forward to the end of this pretentious so called "sport" to phase out.

Alcoholics Anonymous

With alcohol becoming a staple within out diet, and the addictive alcoholic substance becoming so easy to purchase, are we becoming as society controlled by the drink? Alcoholics Anonymous also known as AA is a foundation created world wide to provide help to those with an alcoholic substance abuse problem. The goal of  the AA program is much more complicated than just staying abstinence from drinking alcohol. Its goal is to change the critical thinking of the inner alcoholic's mind set "to bring about recovery from alcoholism". This is done through a 12 step program,  its Members are encouraged to find an reformed alcoholic to guide them through the process of the program and to help with the obstacles along the way. Ideally with binge drinking becoming so common within our society today AA is becoming a regular occurrence for many of its drinkers, Alcohol is an addictive "drug" in which we use and abuse on a regular basis.

We all love to have the occasional drink don't we? I know that many of those "quiet" nights have turned into " what happened last night?" Yes we have all experienced those nights, and just quietly those are the best kind of nights! But when has enough become enough?
If you feel alcohol has taken over your emotional and psychological physic please contact your community AA program.

Fantastical world of the Otherkins!

This is probably one of the most bizarre subcultures I've ever heard about, but probably the one i'de most likely like to be apart of and have connections with because I love the idea of fantasy worlds, books and movies! Otherkins are a bunch of people who think are both human and non-human! This can be in a Spiritual, Mental, Soul or even sometimes Physical (but there is a lot of scepticism around this) way. This 'other part' of the human is called a Kin.

This is a picture of a Heptagram; many Otherkin's use this symbol as an identifier!

The most common groups or Kin are: Dragon, Weres, Angelic/Angelkin, Demon & Fae. Also Vampires. Some more “Rare” kin are Unicorn/Alicorn, Gryphons, Mermaids, Phoenix, Draconcats (thanks to http://werewolfmegapackforums.webs.com/whatisotherkin.htm for this list)

This is an illustration taken from the Otherkin Alliance website

If I were ever to become an Otherkin, I would definitely be a mermaid! They are the coolest.

Or maybe a Unicorn? Everyone knows Unicorns are great.
I love deh Unicornzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

RIOT ABOUT IT

If riot girl was real life.
I am embraced by indeterminate sexual preference. I like to dress like a man to be seen as strong and mysterious. Men will be attracted to me if I act like assholes to them.. or maybe I like women now I want to express my sexuality openly.. I am a feminist and I will be angry at a man for being a man. I will read Valerie Solans' S.C.U.M manifesto and I will not wear dresses if my mother tells me too. I will play bass and I will express my opinion.

crazy talk. no
this is riot grrl

The most modern phenomena of riot grrl to date is probably the Pussy Riot band that erected in 2012 in Soviet Russia. Although these girls may shave their legs, and may not crush men with steel cap boots. these women are ANGRY and this is the basis to the riot gurl movement
other modern 2000's bands for pussy riot could also include.. warpaint, best coast, the vivian girls and the dum dum girls. a whole lot of woman.

I started listening to riot girl bands around 2011 when I had just moved out of home. Riot gurl bands that I listened to included Bikini Kill, bratmobile and le tigre.. others that come under this similar sound could include pony up and even cat power.
Although.. I would like to say this subculture changed me.. I can't say it did. I did shave my hair off a year a later for no real legitmate reason except by the fact that I wanted to be a punk. however, in the case of being a riot gurrl in real life. in the flesh. the subculture has too many contradictions, that extreme feminism embraces, that is unfair to use in 2012 where gender equality exists.. well almost exists. I mean.. it is true gender equality will never be true equality and maybe this is wrong however.. if I was a man, I would have a hard time understanding a woman.

Don't get me wrong I love being a woman but even today with the feminist blood flowing through us we still want chivalry.. but we also  independence.
we still want to be seen as mysterious creatures.. but we also want to be noticed.
As complex as it is being a woman I wouldn't have it any other way even if we are walking contradictions.

power to the pussy and that

I AM AN ANTI-CHRIST! I AM AN ANARCHIST!

^ If you recognise these lyrics, I salute you!
The Sex Pistols have always been one of my favourite bands, not so much for their association with the punk scene but I just genuinely like their music and a lot of what they stand for. I don't consider myself a punk or an anarchist by any means what-so-ever but I am extremely interested in the culture that surrounds the music and the people involved in this way of life.
In year 9 my best friend and I were obsessed with punk music, especially after she moved to Melbourne and made friends with a group of "scum punks". The first time I went down to visit her and her new friends, I was completely shocked by their behaviour and couldn't believe that my friend was hanging out with these kind of people. They smelt like cheap beer and cigarettes, wore clothes with holes in it, were rude to random people on the street and had an intimidating 'gang' mentality about them, they swore consistently and would randomly break into song and scream out the lyrics of their favourite punk songs whenever they felt the need. They were always messing around, moshing with each other in random places and I guess just causing general 'anarchy' and scaring the general public. At first I felt uncomfortable because we would get strange looks from people, but because they are so un-phased by the outside world and carelessly outgoing it was soon hard to not be having fun. They opened up my mind to a whole new lifestyle and even though I could never live the way they do, I throughly enjoyed spending time with them for a brief time.
My friend started dating one of these punks and emersed herself in this life for almost a year but eventually things came crumbling down. Today she says she is so happy she got away from that group of people but we both agree that they taught us a lot about the world, not to care what others think and introduced us to some awesome music!

SEX PISTOLS- ANARCHY IN THE UK

I found this website which gives a humorous explanation of Punks/ Anarcho-punks. The following extracts are from http://www.howtobepunk.com/punks/anarcho-punk

Anarcho Punk

Being an anarcho punk is no easy task. First and foremost, it requires a lot of vocal endurance, as you will spend most of your waking hours bitching and whining about the government and establishment.
Secondly, it takes physical endurance. You can expect to take a few beatings from riot squad cops. Be sure to bring your camera though, so you can take pictures of yourself posing as a helpless victim of an unfair, oppressive, and corrupt system (which would surely dissapear, should anarchy be in place). Then you can give the pictures to an anarcho punk magazine that nobody reads so you can be a martyr for all punks everywhere.
Lastly, a lot of mental stamina is required. You will be constantly thinking -- using every bit of brainpower you can -- of new ways to feel oppressed and victimized. This is quite possibly the hardest task of all, as not many people have this kind of mental discipline.

Nonconformity

Since anarchy is about freedom, you need to convince everyone else to think the same way you do, because they won't be free unless they think exactly like you. Just be really confident about it, that way you won't have to have many valid arguments, they'll just take your word for it. If you have the chance, be sure to name off the strong points of anarchy...like, well...hmm. I'll get back to you on that. Like I was saying, if you see someone eating meat, be sure to scream at them and spit on their food. This will definitely convince them that "meat is murder" and shouldn't be eaten.
Shove your opinions in others people's faces constantly, reminding them that our fascist nation won't ever be free unless everyone is forced to think the same. Hand out documents on how anarchy benefited factory workers in Chile for 2 weeks, or how anarchy WOULD have worked during the Spanish Civil War if only it hadn't NOT worked. Be sure to quote Emma Goldman all the time, even if you don't know who she is.

Music

Listen to bands like Conflict, Crass, Rudimentary Peni, Flux of the Pink Indians...etc. Make sure your iPod Touch is loaded to the brim with anarcho-punk music. If you forget your iPod, just hum the tunes of your favorite songs or sing the lyrics out loud...otherwise how will other anarchists know how committed you are?

Thugs Life.

It's a thugs life.

A gangster is a criminal who is a member of a gang. Some gangs are considered to be part of organized crime. Gangsters are also called mobsters. Gangs provide a level of organization and resources that support much larger and more complex criminal transactions than an individual criminal could achieve. Gangsters have been active for many years in countries around the world. Some gangsters, perhaps most notably Al Capone, have become famous. Gangsters are the subject of many movies, particularly from the period between 1930 and 1960. The term "Gangster" is now used for members of street gangs.

Gangs have long been the subject of movies. In fact, the first feature length movie ever produced was The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906), an Australian production that traced the life of the outlaw Ned Kelly (1855–1880). The United States has profoundly influenced the genre, but other cultures have contributed distinctive and often excellent gangster movies.

The classic gangster movie ranks with the Western as one of the most successful creations of the American movie industry. The "classic" form of gangster movie, rarely produced in recent years, tells of a gangster working his way up through his enterprise and daring, until his organization collapses while he is at the peak of his powers. Although the ending is presented as a moral outcome, it is usually seen as no more than an accidental failure. The gangster is typically articulate, although at times lonely and depressed, and his wordly wisdom and defiance of social norms has a strong appeal, particularly to adolescents.

The stereotypical image and myth of the American gangster is closely associated with organized crime during the Prohibition era of the 1920s and 1930s. 1931 and 1932 saw the genre produce three classics: Warner Bros. Little Caesar and The Public Enemy, which made screen icons out of Edward G. Robinson and James Cagney, and Howard Hawks' Scarface starring Paul Muni, which offered a dark psychological analysis of a fictionalized Al Capone. These films chronicle the quick rise, and equally quick downfall, of three young, violent criminals, and represent the genre in its purest form before moral pressure would force it to change and evolve. Though the gangster in each film would face a violent downfall which was designed to remind the viewers of the consequences of crime, audiences were often able to identify with the charismatic anti-hero. Those suffering from the Depression were able to relate to the gangster character who worked hard to earn his place and success in the world, only to have it all taken away from him. More recently, gangsters have been depicted in American popular culture in films such as The Godfather, War, Hell Up in Harlem, and Goodfellas, and in television shows such as The Sopranos).

The influence of Gangsters in popular culture and their depiction of power has led into the formation of subcultural "gangs" within society. These groups show the same level of organisation and lust for money as the original gangsters that arose in the early 1900's.

Fandom

Fanatics and fans are evidently depicted throughout society today, a fan can be obsessed with a sports group, Celebrities, hobbies, genres or fashion. Nevertheless there can be different levels of Fandom, with the first level being a fan. Which involves a person who supports a liking towards to celebrity, sports group, band or hobby. They may show their enthusiasm by buying a CD produced by their favourite band, wearing a sports jersey of their sporting team or even writing fan mail.

Lets admit it have all conformed to the idea of being a fan in some form or way, lets just say my dad is a fan of the West Tigers NRL team. He is committed to watching every game and lets just say he thinks he is Tim Sheens when it comes to his emotional involvement of the team, with his standard yelling at the TV which portrays his emotional attachment to the team.

But when does enough become enough when it comes to the idea of Fandom? Religion fanatics, movie fanatics and celebrity fanatics seem to be obsessed with the idea of subcultural acts. Religious fanatics are becoming more popular within main stream societies today, as their obsession in religious beliefs are becoming stronger and feel the need to "share the love"through protests, religious blogging and persuasion onto peers.

I am the first to admit that i am a huge Harry Potter fan! but i wouldn't say i would casually dress up as Hermione in my spare time, what really makes you a fanatic in today's society?

Nimbin MardiGrass & Hippie Culture

Visit the Nimbin MardiGrass website for more information:

In 2005 my parents and myself moved to the Northern Rivers in a little down called Modanville; 30 minutes from Byron Bay & 30 minutes from Nimbin. Considering this location, it is no wonder why I have a love and interest for a more alternative lifestyle. Before I moved away from Sydney I thought that Hippies just existed in history and movies but when the phenomenon of dreadlocks, fisherman pants, spiral ear stretchers and the smell of essential oils became an everyday occurance I soon realised that Hippies were real, they still existed and there were hundreds of them!

My first thougths of these people were "what a bunch of droney junkies!" but when I made friends with a boy called Che, who lived on a commune called 'Bodhi Farm' 10 minutes out of Nimbin, I began to see that these so called 'droney junkies' were actually the most amazing group of people i'de ever been introduced too. I could go on for days as to why I'm so in love with the hippie culture and people but I think everyone needs to experience the lifestyle for themselves and meet the people who make up the hippie stereotype.

I've been to Nimbin MardiGrass multiple times over the years and it's one of the funnest, most bizarre events I've ever been too! For anyone who loves the Hippie culture, is interested in the Legalization of Marijuana, likes a more alternative lifestyle, enjoys psychedelic experiences, markets, live music and awesome food, then you should definitely organise a trip to the Northern Rivers. Not just for the MardiGrass but for all the other awesome places to visit around the area.

Here are some photos of my MardiGrass experience to give you an idea of what to expect!

WHERE DO YOU BELONG?

Have YOU been wondering about where, if and how YOU fit in to this crazy ol' world... Well, so have we! As a result:

We created a blog about it.

SUB CLUB is about expressing your point of view about subcultures. What is it that creates them, shapes them, labels them and what are they? Well, that's what we hope to encapsulate with personal opinion and self critical reflection. So read on and please; tell us where you "fit" in.

Tribes of sydney is the follow up article to the original "Tribes of the City", written in the Sydney Morning Herald in 1998. The original artiical identified the subcultures that had developed and become previlent amongst Sydney youths. 10 years on the revised artical discusses the changes within the subcultural groups and the influences that have shaped them.

The tribes, from left: The Emo, The SuperGeek, The Jock Dolly, The Gangsta, The Punk Lite, The Glamazon, The Hipster, and The Techno Boho

The thing I find interesting is how technological advances have allowed underground groups to become mainstream and isolated communities of like-minded people have been able to expand their reach. Developments of social networks and interactive websites and applications has allowed for members of one particular subculture to become influenced with many others'. The amalgamation of multiple subculture's is now more acceptable than ever and has shaped a new subculture the "Slashie".
